Pioneering the circular economy: Successful recycling of pharmaceutical glass

Pilot project by SCHOTT and Sanofi with Infraserv Höchst as project partner

SCHOTT , a specialty glass manufacturer, has implemented an innovative pilot project together with Sanofi and Infraserv Höchst. The aim was to integrate unused pharmaceutical vials back into the production cycle and thus promote the circular economy.

  • Sanofi had been storing pharmaceutical vials for a long time that needed to be disposed of.
  • This is where Infraserv Höchst came in as an experienced partner: We took over the task of unpacking the jars at our own disposal center in Industriepark Höchst. It is particularly important to work cleanly so as not to contaminate the recyclable material.
  • Finally, the vials were returned to SCHOTT after our professional processing, melted down and used for the production of new vials.

Thanks to the short distances on site, SCHOTT and Sanofi benefited from particularly fast and smooth processing because Infraserv Höchst's waste disposal center was located in close proximity to the production sites.

This project illustrates how close cooperation and geographical proximity can significantly advance a sustainable circular economy in the pharmaceutical industry.
